Instructions

Steps

  • Cut 2 bauble pieces using the template provided

  • Put them the right way up (you can stroke them to feel what way up the should go), pin in place before sewing then sew around the edges, with a 5mm seam. You can sew with a machine or by hand. Make sure you don't sew over the face!

  • Cut out your ear templates. You'll need two pieces of felt and four pieces of fabric - two for the left and 2 for the right.

  • Place the felt on the ears - you can use the template for placement if needed, then attach the felt. You can either sew or glue it on.

  • Next put the right sides facing and pin in place and sew the two pieces together. You can use the felt stitching as a guide on how big you want the ears to be.

  • Turn the ears through. I use a chopstick to push the fabric through and shape the ears.

  • Pin the ears in place on the face. You will need to leave a gap for the bauble topper and sew. This is an opportunity to arrange the ears in the right position, so you may need to unpick the sewing and adjust until you are happy with how they look.

  • The next step is the back. Cut and sew three bauble pieces together, as you did for the front. However this time, leave a small gap for turning the bauble through at the end. Make sure the ears are down and you have the back the right way up. Then pin the front and back together. You'll want to make sure the points of the bauble shape align up on the front and back, so that all 6 points meet in the centre. Also make sure the ears are sandwiched between the front and back, then sew all the way around to join them together.

  • You can now turn it through the right way, to reveal your cute bauble face.

  • To add the ribbon, first insert a needle in the centre - sharp end pointing out. Add a double knot to the ribbon, then thread the needle with cotton thread and tie to the ribbon. Pull the needle through and it will bring the ribbon through too. You can also easily thread the bauble topper onto the ribbon this way. Just cut the thread off when you've finished.

  • Use around 10g of stuffing to fill your bauble. You may need to squish the face to make it rounder.

  • The last step is to close the gap with a ladder stitch, by sewing from one side then another and pulling tight to close. Finish by tying a double knot in the thread. You can put the needle through the bauble before cutting, to tuck away the loose thread.

Happy sewing! Please share your finished makes - so we can inspire other Stays.

Variations

You could make multiple baubles for your whole tree - Skzoo with different facial expressions, or added clothing like witter hats!

Whatever you decide, please share your makes with us #skzoomakes, so we can share them on Your Makes!
